how do you know who you’re buying from?
on facebook marketplace, sellers type in their own location, and meta’s help page doesn’t say it checks it. in july 2026, meta started rolling out a facebook verified badge, which uses a video selfie to confirm a real person is behind a profile. it doesn’t check location, and meta says the badge isn’t an endorsement.
on wareby, a real person checks every shop before it opens: the owner’s id, the address they sell from, and a food permit for anyone selling food. only independent businesses can sell (no chains, franchises or drop-shippers), and shoppers only see shops within 25 miles. what “verified local” means.
what happens if a purchase goes wrong?
facebook’s purchase protection covers only items bought with shipping and checkout. it doesn’t cover local pickup, payments in messenger, or paying a seller directly with apps like paypal or venmo.
the wareby promise covers every order, pickup included. if an order isn’t ready at your pickup time, is never delivered or never ships, you get a full refund. if it arrives damaged, wrong or not as described, the shop makes it right, and if it doesn’t, we step in.
how common are scams?
the federal trade commission’s numbers are hard to ignore. in 2025, nearly 30% of people who reported losing money to fraud said it started on social media, with $2.1 billion lost. online shopping scams were the most reported kind, and more money was lost to scams that started on facebook than on any other platform.
the ftc doesn’t count marketplace on its own, and it says most fraud goes unreported. on wareby, every shop is a checked, independent local business, and you pay through one checkout before you pick up.
what does it cost to sell?
for sellers, facebook marketplace is cheaper: local pickup listings are free, and shipped orders cost 10% (80¢ minimum), figured on the item, shipping and sales tax. that rate doubled from 5% in april 2024.
wareby is free to start, with no listing fees: 10% per sale on the free plan, plus 3% + 30¢ card processing. what that pays for is a shop page, checkout, pickup windows and your own delivery area, weekly payouts, and shoppers who know every shop is checked. see seller plans.
when is facebook marketplace the better pick?
facebook marketplace is the better fit if:
- you’re clearing out your own things: a couch, a bike, a box of baby clothes. wareby is for businesses, not one-off sales
- you want to pay nothing to sell. local pickup listings are free
- you want the biggest possible audience for a single item
if you run a local business and want shoppers to trust you from the first order, wareby is built for that.
