can minnesota home bakers sell on doordash?
no, not today. minnesota’s cottage food law says that when a home-made product is delivered, the person who made it has to be the one who delivers it:
“If an exempt food product will be delivered to the ultimate consumer upon sale of the food product, the individual who prepared the food product must be the person who delivers the food product to the ultimate consumer.”
minnesota statutes, section 28A.152, subdivision 2(b)
the minnesota department of agriculture’s guidance also allows your employee, but a doordash, uber eats or grubhub courier is neither. you can still take orders online, as long as you hand them over yourself.
that changes on august 1, 2027, when a 2025 law lets cottage food be delivered “by mail, or by commercial delivery.” the mda hasn’t said yet whether app couriers will count, so check its guidance before you rely on one.
wareby is built for the rule as it stands: you set pickup windows at your home and your own delivery area and days, and you hand every order over in person. more on cottage food and apps.
what does doordash charge sellers, compared with wareby?
doordash’s plans for restaurants with up to 75 locations, from its own pricing page, next to wareby’s:
| plan | delivery orders | pickup orders |
|---|---|---|
| doordash basic | 15% | 6% |
| doordash plus | 25% | 6% |
| doordash premier | 30% | 6% |
| wareby open (free) | 10% + 3% + 30¢ | 10% + 3% + 30¢ |
| wareby found ($29 a month) | 8% + 3% + 30¢ | 8% + 3% + 30¢ |
| wareby loved ($79 a month) | 6% + 3% + 30¢ | 6% + 3% + 30¢ |
doordash’s commission includes card processing; wareby’s 3% + 30¢ is the card processing. on a $35 delivery order, a restaurant on doordash plus keeps $26.25. a wareby shop on the free plan keeps $30.15, and a founding shop (loved, free for its first year) keeps $31.55.
two fair points for doordash: its courier does the driving, and its 6% pickup commission (when pickup prices match in-store prices) is lower than any wareby plan.
minneapolis caps delivery-app commissions. since 2021, city code chapter 353 has required apps to offer restaurants a plan that takes 15% or less of each delivery order.
