what’s the difference between fiverr and wareby?

fiverr is a marketplace for freelance services, mostly done remotely: logo design, video editing, writing, coding. it allows some physical items, like arts and crafts, but shipping has to be built into the price, and fiverr says it doesn’t handle or guarantee shipping.

wareby is for physical things made by verified local businesses, including made-to-order work: a birthday cake, a portrait of your dog, a hand-lettered sign, a bouquet for saturday. you agree on the details in messages, then pick it up, have the maker deliver it, or have it shipped.

if you need a logo or a video edited, fiverr is built for that. if you want something made by hand by someone near you, wareby is.

what does fiverr take, compared with wareby?

here’s the same $35 order on each, from fiverr’s payment terms and wareby’s plans:

on a $35 orderfiverrwareby freewareby founding
buyer service fee$5.43$0$0
the buyer pays$40.43$35.00$35.00
taken from the maker$7.00$4.85$3.45
to the platform and card fees, in all$12.43$4.85$3.45
the maker keeps$28.00$30.15$31.55

fiverr’s 20% also comes out of tips and extras, and every extra payment gets its own buyer fee. once an order is done, the money is held for 14 days before a freelancer can withdraw it (7 for top rated sellers), and a bank transfer through payoneer costs $1.

wareby charges shoppers nothing extra, pays shops every week, and gives at least 30 days’ notice before any price goes up. see seller plans.

how does it work out for the people doing the work?

in 2023, the oxford internet institute’s fairwork project rated online work platforms on fair pay, conditions, contracts, management and representation. fiverr scored 1 out of 10.

on wareby, makers set their own prices, sell to people who live near them, and keep about 86 to 90% of a $35 order, before any monthly plan.

why hire someone near you?

custom work goes better when you can talk it through, see it in person and pick it up yourself. and the money stays close. civic economics, an economic research firm, surveyed 318 businesses in 20 places between 2012 and 2022. independent retailers put 52.9% of their revenue back into the local economy (local wages, local suppliers, local services and profits spent nearby), compared with 13.6% for chain retailers.

every wareby shop is checked by a real person before it opens, and the wareby promise covers every order: if it’s never ready, never delivered or never shipped, you get your money back.

when is fiverr the better pick?

fiverr is the better fit if:

  • you need digital work, like a logo, a website, editing or translation. it has more than 750 categories
  • you want someone to start today, from anywhere in the world
  • you like fixed-price packages, with fiverr holding the payment until the work is delivered

if you want something made by hand, by someone you can actually meet, that’s what wareby is for.
